I am thinking about buying a 55 ft yacht and I am wondering how frequently I need to clean or paint the bottom of the boat. I am used to a smaller boat that is garage stored and I am wondering what kind of maintenece I will have with a boat kept in the water at the mairina. I am located in Los Angeles.
The hule is fiberglass and it sits in salt water.

For some reason, the movie “the money pit” comes to mind.
Also the book, “How I refinished my house for 3 times the original estimate.”
You first concern is, does it sit in the water all the time and if so what kind of water (salt or fresh). 2nd is it a fiberglass, aluminum or steel hull. For fiberglass it should come out of salt water about every other year and be cleaned in fresh water every 4-5 years. For aluminum not sure about salt water but fresh water, virtually never. Steel hull is something quite different, in salt water every year and fresh water every 2-3 years for cleaning and painting. You will need anti foul paint for either salt or fresh water. It will have to be done by a marina or boat place and the costs will be pulling the boat out, cleaning and/or sandblasting, primer, paint, then putting boat back in. We had a 53′ house boat, live in MO and it costs us around $4500 to do it.
Botton painting, winter storage (if needed), dock or mooring charges (for dock: usage, for mooring : putting it in and taking it out)
Launch and store.Slip fees, bottom painting, winterizing(if needed),many things to consider. Can be costly,so pull out the checkbook!
Jeez.. 55-footer.. nice!
Well, you’re gonna have to haul the sucker out at LEAST every two years for bottom-paint ($) Not sure what the berthing fees are in L.A. but they’re quite reasonable ($30/ft) here in Nova Scotia Canada. I’ll guess $100/foot ($$) You’ll probably want to clean and wax the hull twice a year($) Brightwork needs to be attended to ($) as well.
Hope your Visa is clear!
Good Luck!
good ol’ AUdio God and Scooter Girl have hit the high….ie the expensive points……..haul/clean launch support while its out is $15 a foot in St Thomas and I’ll bet twice that in LA, land of the EPA and OSHA….then $200 a gallon for anti fouling paint, times, say 6 gallons….so, yeah, 4000 a year JUST FOR antifouling sounds right..
see what marina dockage is in LA….even more important, is it available? Does the boat come with a slip? Otherwise you may find waiting lists for years….
Is there varnish work to maitain? Yards probably charge north of $75 an hour for their varnishers……..
and you didnt mention if it’s power or sail….routine oil and filter changes on a 55 foot boats engines are another $500 a year…..
so, just to keep up with whats there now, and NOT counting dockage……..figure $7500 a year as a minimum
haul boat once a yr and clean and put specail bottom paint on, also check zinks for electrolosis. might have to sand built up old paint off abit.
Well the marina rent is charged by the foot so say good bye to your wallet. in the ocean it is good to clean your boat every 6 months this costs about a 100-150 dollars. Every three years or so you take the boat out of the water to get your boat repainted with anti fouling paint cost 2000+. insurance for a boat that big isn’t nice either. You also must get your sewage removed and water and fuel how much is determined by how much you use the boat. Well money bags good luck with your yacht if you need a crewman give me an E-mail.
