I would like to visit Thailand and want to arrive with an open return air ticket?

I am aware of the 30 day visitor restriction.

I have heard Thai immigration will not allow you in the country without a definite seat booked out of Thailand within 30 days.

Is this true?

Or will they accept my *open return* ticket and my explanation that I shall be booking my final departure date within 30 days of arriving?

I am not exactly sure when I will be leaving Thailand but I obviously won’t overstay.

You will not have a problem with an open return ticket. Keep in mind that open return tickets do cost more.

yes u will get 30 days on arrival visa if u r europian, if u apply visa from ur country u can get 2 months or some time 3 months visa, open ticket is not problem, but u have to leave thailand before ur visa finish, 2 more options..1. u can take tourist visa extention but valid for only 1 week from bangkok thai embassey ( cost 1900 thai baht)at silom.. 2. u can go to combodia come back after 1 day and get again 1 month visa, lots of busses go combodia for only visa run ( 2000 bhat combodia run+ 1000 bhat thai visa ).. but its better to take thai visa before u get maximum saty and cheap

Sounds like your plans are open, so get a tourist visa. Apparently free at the moment.

Or carry an e-ticket/schedule printout that does have dates on it - easy enough to book and cancel flights without paying for them.

You are VERY unlikely to be hassled about onward flight bookings by immigration, but if you have done a lot of repeat 30 day entries, or you are (what a Thai immigration official) considers a high risk country/nationality (African, or even just black, Indian, Eastern European, Filipinos etc), you’re young, dressed provocatively, you’re rude etc, then the chances of trouble increase.

All immigration/custom officials are on the lookout for smugglers, drug users, hookers, and people at risk of overstay/illegal workers. Don’t dress or act like one of these, and your experience with Thai immigration should always be pretty painless.

You shouldn’t have a problem with an open return plane ticket You just have to leave Thailand before your time runs out. Do you have any idea how long you will be in this part of the world? Because it is usually cheaper to have a fixed date of departure.

Just within the past 24 hours Thai Immigration will again give out free 60 day visas to stimulate tourism. Here is a link to that “breaking news” on free visas if you intend to stay past the free 30 days. .

Free tourist visas between June 25, 2009 and March 2010.

Usually at the airport when you go through immigration they rarely ever ask for proof of an onward ticket. I suppose if you look like you can not afford to be in Thailand they may ask for more information. You are supposed to have enough money to support yourself in Thailand and not be a burden to the country.

Good luck.

Yes it certainly sounds like you are not really sure…maybe you will stay longer?

Do yourself a favor and get a tourist visa before you leave your home country if you think you may stay longer.

Many do stay longer in Thailand if they can.

You will have no problem entering Thailand with your open ticket.

Have fun in Thailand!
