Looking for a book that will give me the basic knowledge and vocabulary (nautical terms) for sailing techniques, particularly older but current would work as well. Thanks!

‘The Boater’s Bible’ is exactly that. It includes, sailing technique, navigation, maintenance and other important subjects as well as having an extensive glossary.
The Macmillan Visual Dictionary has diagrams of sailing ships with the parts of the boat, down to the individual sails, named. That with the other recommendation should get you through. If you want to know about actual use in conversation, I suggest you watch the A&E series of Horatio Hornblower. Very good for getting flavor.
I recommend John Rousmaniere’s Annapolis Book of Sailing. It is complete.
As one of the survivors of the famous 1979 Fastnet sailing disaster, Rousmaniere has an interesting perspective on heavy weather.
